Art or blasphemy: Lady Gaga’s Judas

Like always Lady Gaga has stirred up a whole heap of controversy with the song Judas, especially now that the video is out. Gaga explains that the video is meant to be more of a social statement rather than a religious statement in her interview with E!…

Maybe, it is a social statement. Here are the actual lyrics to the song….

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Judas! Juda-as Judas! Juda-as
Judas! Juda-as Judas! GAGA

[Lady Gaga – Verse 1]
When he comes to me, I am ready
I’ll wash his feet with my hair if he needs
Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain
Even after three times, he betrays me

I’ll bring him down, bring him down, down
A king with no crown, king with no crown

[Chorus]

I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby
I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Judas! Juda-as Judas! Juda-as
Judas! Juda-as Judas! GAGA

[Lady Gaga – Verse 2]
I couldn’t love a man so purely
Even prophets forgave his crooked way
I’ve learned love is like a brick you can
Build a house or sink a dead body
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/l/lady_gaga/judas.html ]
I’ll bring him down, bring him down, down
A king with no crown, king with no crown

[Chorus]
I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby
I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

[Bridge]
In the most Biblical sense,
I am beyond repentance
Fame hooker, prostitute wench, vomits her mind
But in the cultural sense
I just speak in future tense
Judas kiss me if offenced,
Or wear an ear condom next time

I wanna love you,
But something’s pulling me away from you
Jesus is my virtue,
And Judas is the demon I cling to
I cling to

[Chorus]
I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby
I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel
But still I’m in love with Judas, baby

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Ohohohoh
I’m in love with Judas, Judas

Judas! Juda-as Judas! Juda-as
Judas! Juda-as Judas! GAGA

And finally the video:

What do you think? I can understand her explanation but can also understand why people could be offended…. Art or blasphemy….you decide….

  1. Neither.

I feel like she’s borrowing from Madonna’s career playbook. When I read about this I immediately flashed back to 1990 and the controversy around the video for Like a Prayer.

Lady Gaga is talented but it takes more that that to stay in the spotlight. This is just the lastest publicity stunt.

  2. The like a prayer video was so controversial. What you said about Gaga is true, talent doesn’t keep you famous. Controversy does. I didn’t even like the song at first but after all the hoopla, I kept listening to it and now, i can’t help but love it.
